Nepal: Christians 'On Top of the World' Facing Persecution

Nepal is known for being 'on top of the world.' It's also a country where Hinduism and Maoism struggle for dominance. Christians face widespread persecution but God is on the move. Their numbers have grown from 29 people when the first church was planted in Nepal 60 years ago, to nearly one million today. Most of those coming to Christ in Nepal are former Hindus who face much opposition, including that of a young girl whose mother tried to kill her for becoming a Christian. Gary Lane has the story.

Efforts to Reinstate Hindu Nation Spark Concerns

In 2008, the country of Nepal underwent a historic transition to become a secular republic. The monarchy had been abolished, and a constitutional republic was established instead. As part of the process, the constitution guaranteed religious freedom for all citizens, and Hinduism lost its status as the official religion of the nation.

Pastor Acquitted of Illegal Conversion Charges

In December 2024, Pastor Janmajaya Bhattarai, joined by a team of fellow Christians, distributed gifts and clothing to underprivileged students. At the request of local schools, the believers faithfully carried out this outreach program for several years as a Christmas tradition.

Christians Harassed for Sharing Their Faith

While three Christians, including Pastor Dipak Shrestha, were sharing their faith on March 23rd in the remote village of Banjara, Madhesh Province, they were confronted by members of the militant Hindu group, Bajarangi Dal. The aggressors physically assaulted the evangelists before reporting them to the police.

Appeal Denied for Pastor

In November 2021, Keshav Raj Acharya, the pastor of the Abundant Harvest Church in Pokhara, Nepal, was convicted of proselytising and, as a result, sentenced to two years in prison. Even though his sentence was reduced to one year upon appeal, Pastor Keshav subsequently appealed to the Supreme Court of Nepal. For more details, read these reports.
