Helen Berhane
Imprisoned in Eritrea
Helen Berhane, a gospel singer and Bible teacher, was arrested and imprisoned in her home country of Eritrea, where the totalitarian government seeks to control every aspect of its citizens’ lives. She spent 32 months locked in a shipping container without adequate ventilation, light, sanitation or food. And she endured severe torture, which almost killed her and left her unable to walk. When Helen was released in 2006, she fled the country and was later granted asylum in Denmark, where she recovered from her injuries.
