Six Christians of Uyghur descent were recently imprisoned in China's northwestern province of Xinjiang. All were charged with illegal preaching, gathering, and spreading harmful books. They were each sentenced to at least five years in prison. Detained were Mehmet Abdulla, Huji Abdurehim, Maimaiti Yimingjiang, Adil Jan, a Christian doctor with the last name of Rakhman, and a man identified only as "Brother Adil." Some of these believers are new converts to Christ.

In recent years, China has conducted a campaign to suppress the Uyghur people, mainly for their religious beliefs. Amnesty International claims that there are more than one million Chinese citizens of Uyghur descent presently being detained; many of them are Muslim. While the government claims the detentions are to curb terrorism, accounts leaked from forced labour camps report of torture, starvation, rape and rampant abuse.

Uplift in prayer the many Uyghur people who are suffering in Chinese prison camps because of their ethnicity and faith. Pray for their protection and health, as well as the assurance of God's presence with them while anxiously hoping for release. May the Chinese government yield to international pressure and stop the arbitrary detention of these wrongly treated people.

  • Current Ministry Projects

The Voice of the Martyrs Canada continues to help distribute Bibles to Christians in the country, making it possible for them to have their own printed version of God's Word. Additionally, VOMC works with various mission partners to facilitate a Biblical understanding of persecution and discipleship, while presenting ways to effectively respond and minister within the context of hostility.

  • Pray for China

Pray that the Gospel will be proclaimed throughout China without government interference so many more names can be added to the Lamb's "Book of Life." May there also be a spirit of unity demonstrated among the country's growing churches, further strengthening existing believers and spurring them on in their ministry service and evangelistic outreach within the country's numerous communities.
